This engine has a 1-1/8" x 2-3/4" shaft on it. You could use a different spec engine and even a longer shaft that could be cut down or a bushing put on on the end to take up the difference. Any engine besides the original spec will require minor alterations. If you use the CH740-0124 engine there may be minor differences like wiring, air breather, throttle and choke controls. Parts should be interchangeable as needed. The shaft is 4" long but can be cut down as needed.
