Spring is almost here, and making sure your mower is ready to go is crucial not only for the start of the season, but also for its performance and durability through the fall. There are several things to keep in mind, which are easily overlooked. That’s why we’ve put together this checklist of all the essentials, so you can know how to be prepared for a long, successful mowing season.
Hopefully, some of these tasks were completed at the end of last season during the winterizing process. If not, no worries. It’s better late than never.
Check Oil
Pay attention to not only the quantity of oil, but the quality also. Dark, dirty oil needs to be changed right away. How often you use your mower will determine the next time it needs a change, so be sure to check it regularly. You should be changing your oil at least once a year, so keep that in mind moving forward.
Check All Filters
Those filters are fuel, oil, and air. Not every mower has all three, so consult your owner’s manual if you are unsure. When you change your oil, also replace the oil filter. An air filter should be checked constantly, but is very easy to clean off. When it becomes stained, really dirty, or damaged, it will need to be replaced. A good fuel filter ensures your gas stays clean, so this should also be regularly checked and changed when needed.
Change Spark Plug
Spark plugs are inexpensive yet crucial to the performance of your mower’s engine. It’s recommended to change these at least once a year, so before the mowing season begins is the best time to do so. Ensure your spark plug has the correct gap before reinstalling to maintain optimal engine performance.
Inspect Mower Belts
Do a quick inspection of your mower’s belt. If it’s visibly damaged or looks like it could break soon, replace it now. It’s better to handle it now than in the middle of the busy season.
Use Clean Fuel
Do not use old, worn out fuel in your mower. Doing so will damage the engine, potentially leading to costly repairs. Fuel stabilizer can be used to extend the lifespan of fuel, but even that will go bad eventually. If you didn’t run the mower dry at the end of last season or add fuel stabilizer, drain any remaining fuel from the tank.
