Frequently Asked Questions

...about Small Engine Warehouse, Inc.

Why did your name change from "Roy Padgett Sales"? Did Roy Padgett retire or sell the company?

We incorporated at the beginning of 2002, and changed our name at that time. There were several reasons for the name change. First, our employment has grown dramatically, and the new employees are not all Padgetts. Also, Roy spends most of his time travelling, so there is no need for someone to ask to talk to him. Mostly though, the new name helps to identify what we do, especially to new customers.

Where is Dunkirk, Indiana? How do I get there?

There are a couple of things that make matters more confusing. First, there are two Dunkirk's in Indiana. The other one is in Cass county near Logansport. We are located just north of Dunkirk, about 50 miles south of Fort Wayne, or 20 miles northeast of Muncie. Second, Dunkirk is located primarily in Jay County, but our business is in Blackford County, so none of the online mapping programs will lead you to the right place. Click here for correct map & directions. We do not have any other locations, but we can ship any item to you. Less than 20% of our sales actually occur at our store.

...about Buying and Paying

Can I set up an account?

Sorry, we do not set up any accounts. All orders must be paid in advance. We will accept credit card information over the phone, or you can mail us a check or money order first.

Do you have special pricing for dealers?

We sell at the same price to everyone. Our normal pricing is already lower than most dealers can buy for. Unless you are looking to buy about 10 engines or more, there generally will not be any further discounting from our published pricing. In many cases, however, you can save shipping costs buy buying more than one at a time.

What is the purpose of the Card ID (also CVV2 or CVC2) number?

Those 3 (or 4 for American Express) digits are for a fraud-prevention system used by our credit card processor to verify that the customer actually has the card. Since those numbers do not appear on any statement or receipt, only the cardholder would have access to it. We require the Card ID as well as the billing address to match the numbers on file with your credit card company in order to accept your card as payment.

If I place an order from another state, will I have to pay sales tax if I pick it up?

Yes. If the sale occurs in Indiana, whether picked up here, or shipped to any address in Indiana, we must charge sales tax.

What items can be exempt from sales tax?

Any item can be exempt if it is being bought for resale and you have a valid retail merchant certificate. Many items can be exempt for agricultural use, but only if they are being used in food production. Pressure washers, generators, and lawn mowers (and the engines for them) would never be considered tax-exempt items.

...about Shipping and Returns

Will you ship C.O.D.?

Under no circumstances.

How do I get a tracking number?

If we have your email address, tracking numbers are automatically sent the day after the order ships. In other cases, just call and any one of us can get that for you.

Why does shipping cost more to a residence?

Go to any freight company web site and you will see that all charge extra to deliver to a home. The $15 residential delivery fee for truck shipments may sound like a lot at first, but how often does a semi-truck make deliveries to your home? Many times they may have to reload onto a smaller truck be be able to make the delivery. They will do it, but there is also much extra hassle involved.

Will the trucking company call before delivering my order?

Sometimes. If the order is being delivered to a residential address, they will call many times to schedule delivery, but they are not obligated to do so. If the delivery is going to a business address, they would almost never call first.

Will the trucking company help me unload my order from the truck?

The driver is responsible to get the item to the back of the truck. Period. Many will do much more to help out, but again, they are not obligated to do so.

What if I need to return something?

First, read our Return Policy. You will need to call first to get a return authorization number. Rob Padgett (Extension 104) is the only one able to get this for you, so if you get his voice mail, leave a detailed message so that he can call you back.

...about Products in General

What does the manufacturer's warranty cover?

This is sometimes a BIG misconception, warranty is not a guarantee! A guarantee covers something for any reason. A warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for a certain period of time. Bad gas or dirt in the carb have nothing to do with warranty. If you have a warranty problem, take the item to the local dealer along with your sales receipt that we sent you, anything found to be defective the factory will cover parts and labor, anything that is not a defect the customer will be responsible for to cover the dealer’s time involved in the inspection process. These are some of the most common problems which are NOT warranty issues: Low or no oil, stale or dirty fuel, broken shaft, broken starter rope.

Do you sell seconds? Why are your engines so cheap?

About half of the engines we purchase are surplus stock bought from Original Equipment Manufacturer's. For instance, a lawnmower manufacturer may purchase 1,000 engines, but only build 700 of a certain model mower. Many times they will sell those extra 300 engines to generate cash and clear their inventory. Typically these will be different model numbers from the engine manufacturer's general replacement models. Most dealers and distributors sell engines only by the model number because, unlike us, they don't know what an engine could be used for.

...about Engines

I have my model number, why are you asking for the crankshaft size?

This is mainly because we are not selling the normal replacement engines. We buy many of our engines surplus through Original Equipment Manufacturers. These will be different model numbers than those offered by the engine manufacturers. By matching your engine by description, we can potentially save you quite a bit of money.

Do you sell used engines?

Very rarely. Less than 50 of the 20,000 engines we sell each year is "used".

Will that engine work on a go-kart?

We have listed the engines recommended for a go-kart or minibike. With any other items, you would need to do whatever it takes to make it work for you. We will not recommend others or help you pick them. In many cases, using an engine that is not designed for it on a go-kart will void the warranty.

How fast will it go?

There are too many factors to be able to guess. Basically all 4-cycle engines are made to run around 3600 rpm. The sprocket sizes, along with the rider's weight, have a huge impact on the actual vehicle speed.

Is that a complete engine? Does it come with a carburetor? Does it come with a muffler?

Unless the description says it is a shortblock, it will be a complete engine and will include a carburetor. Most engines have listed whether they will come with a muffler. However, on larger engines, normally about 14hp or more, even if it comes with a muffler, you may need to use the muffler from your old engine in order for it to fit in your equipment.

...about Pressure Washers

Can I run hot water through a pressure washer pump?

No. The pump depends on cold water flowing to keep the pump from overheating. Hot water washers have a burner unit which heats the water after it goes through the pump.
